Romeo 💜 Juliette: An Immersive Opera Experience

Prismatic’s first mainstage production! We moved Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers to the streets of South Philly, where the stars of two rival drag clubs meet and fall in love.
The show was a celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture and hometown Philly pride! Our staging included immersive elements like a dance party, a runway contest, and more!
More importantly, in alignment with our goals for equity, we recast roles traditionally sung by basses and tenors to be sung by mezzos and sopranos to gain voice part and gender parity in our cast. (Traditionally, Romeo et Juliette has 3 roles for soprano/mezzo and 9 for basses/tenors… our production had 7 soprano/mezzo roles and 5 bass/tenor roles!!)
Our first live, in-person event since our founding in 2020!
Audience members were treated to a varied program, curated by all three of our co-founders, by way of introducing ourselves and Prismatic’s mission.
Surprises at the show included a curated “Prism” cocktail/mocktail and slight of hand magic from Felipe.
We performed music from many genres and eras: Puerto Rican art song, French chanson, minimalist 20th century solo piano, and even some Broadway!
